Big Island of

Hawai'i

January 24 – 27, 2024

About the Island

The famous Big Island is incredibly diverse, with miles of highways and places to explore. Your senses will be heightened as you explore the island and experience eight of the world’s 13 climate zones that are found here. Gaze at vivid emerald cliffs, swaths of black-, white- and even green-sand beaches, majestic volcanic mountains (possibly snowcapped!), stark lava desert, rolling pastureland and misty valleys, weathered by rain, waves and time. Hawai’i is twice as big as the other Hawaiian Islands combined, and its dramatic terrain is fascinating.

Agriculture on Big Island of Hawai'i

Hawai’i Island is frequently called the breadbasket of Hawai’i for good reason. There are 4,282 farms on island covering 686,856 acres. Agriculture in the Hawai’i Island is a $247 million industry covering everything from aquaculture to tropical flowers and from coffee to cattle. There are 790 coffee farms alone, many on the Hamakua Coast. It’s worth pointing out that half of all farms on island are smaller than 10 acres in size and are owner operated.

We offer the following Group Ag Tour:

Greenwell Farms – Coffee Farm

Kona coffee is cultivated on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa in the North and South Kona Districts of the Big Island of Hawai’i. It is one of the most expensive coffees in the world. Only coffee from the Kona Districts can be described as “Kona.” The weather of sunny mornings, clouds or rain in the afternoon, little wind, and mild nights combined with porous, mineral-rich volcanic soil create favorable coffee-growing conditions. As one of the largest and oldest coffee producers in Kona, Greenwell Farms is proud to celebrate its history and spread the spirit of aloha with every cup. Come and join us for a guided tour of the farm and processing facilities: From seed to cup, you are given an inside look at the history, farming and processing of coffee before sampling Greenwell Farms 100% Kona Coffee.
